To some, Greek soldier costumes may look silly. The men wear something that looks like a pleated skirt with tights and a pom-pom on the shoe. However, silliness aside, this traditional uniform is still worn during special events and at the palace in Athens whose changing of the guard ceremony still captivates tourists and Greeks alike.
For a Greek-American male, wearing this uniform at some point of their life is almost inevitable especially if they attend a Greek Orthodox Church or during other Greek Independence Day celebrations, such as annual parades and other functions. To some, Greek soldier costumes represent the Greek victory. To some, it represents the 400 years that Greece was ruled by the Turks.
In an area where there are a lot of Greeks, it is possible to find traditional Greek soldier costumes both for purchase and to borrow. Buddha Day is celebrated by Buddhists worldwide.
Visakha Puja or Buddha day is the most significant day in the Buddhist calendar, celebrating the three most important incidents in the life of the Buddha, his birth, the enlightenment and the death which all occurred on this day. Its a moveable day falling on the first full moon in May the fifth month except in leap year when it falls in June.
Buddha Day History
Visakha Puja is the holiest of days in all Buddhists lives. Buddhists make merits and attend sermons in temples all over Asia. The countryside people wake up early and start making food and sweets for the monks and then form a long line and walk to their temple of worship to attend in all religious activities.
Many activities are performed during Visakha Puja day, including the most important Tum Boon, going to temples for special observations, listening to Dharma preaching and giving donations. Rub Sil a practiced activity of with holding the 5 precepts which include to abstain from alcohol and all immoral acts. Tuk Bard is practiced by offering food to the monks from the alm bowl, practice of meditation, and many monks stay in the temple for a few days wearing the traditional white robes of the buddha.
Buddha Day Traditions and Activities
Vien Tien is the final activity and the most beautiful. The Buddhists attend a candle lit procession in the evening to their temple of worship holding flowers and three incense sticks. This is a silent homage to their Buddha and his disciples.

Star Wars is an excellent choice for Halloween costumes. Kids absolutely love the Star Wars universe, and the new Clone Wars film has only served to remind them of how cool it would be if they were Luke, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Princess Amidala, Yoda or any number of other great Star Wars characters. Playing out their dreams of being swashbuckling heroes like Hans Solo, or Jedi masters like Yoda, the potential for fun is limitless.
Character Choices for a Star Wars Halloween Costume
Popular character choices from Star Wars include Yoda, the funny looking little green alien who is the head of the Jedi council and the most powerful Jedi of all; Princess Leia, the government official who gets involved in all kinds of adventures along with her brother Luke Skywalker who is the hero of the original three films and defeated the evil Emperor.
Other choices for a more evil look are Jabba the Hutt, the giant space slug who runs a mafia; Darth Vader, the menacing man in black who is always masked and holds some of the most dangerous powers; and the young Anakin Skywalker who is corrupted during his childhood by the forces of evil and grows up into Darth Vader.
